a glorious tribute to your plant totem. Calendula ~ a golden spirit indeed.

After surviving our first big firestorm in Portugal, we witnessed thousands of wild calendula flowers springing up the following spring as if from nowhere, offering her gentle healing to the blackened and scorched earth.

Thank you, Veronika — a golden spirit indeed, a reminder of how far I've come from Father Sun and Mother’s stars. Oh, I’m so happy you're seeing them around! In Portugal, they are truly resilient, and yes, as you beautifully said, they offer gentle healing.

Today happens to be my Calendula day too — I just found some fresh ones right around my block. They're in full bloom, and honestly, I don't need anything else today, just to sit and stare at them.

Warm hugs, Veronika. Thank you for stopping by.

Katerina, your love for Calendula shines through every word - their history, healing and presence across time and cultures. From ancient rituals to mythology, I've just read that some believed Calendula sprang from the sun’s golden tears, a journey of resilience and transformation. The way you weave knowledge, personal connection and poetry into its legacy is truly beautiful.

Your poem is radiant, like the beautiful flower itself, carrying warmth, resilience and deep-rooted spirit. That golden-haired child, traveling through time, feels like a reflection of both the flower’s journey and what I imagine to be your own. Thank you so much for sharing this heartfelt tribute, it's a gift to read. 💛✨

Deborah,

The gift I received is you — the way you see, read, and let me know, with such heartfelt sincerity, that you recognize my love for plants and the deep relationship I have with them. I know you share that same bond — you see right through the petals into their overwhelmingly wise and knowing souls.

It truly carries warmth, because as a child I spent so much time contemplating in the backyard of my apartment block — surrounded by herbs and plants, eating rose petals, feeling free to smell, taste, and play with them.

The plants have helped me along the way, just as much as the trees and the people who’ve shaped me. They helped me be more, feel more.

I’m lucky I noticed them — and even luckier that they noticed me back, always reciprocating.

Thank you, Deborah, for seeing into my writing.

You are, in every way, a gift as well.

Aww, that's so lovely! Thank you so much, Katerina. You know, I was thinking, so many plants have helped me over the years too, and the first one that comes to mind is the beautiful wild foxglove. I remember seeing them for the first time as a child, falling in love with it instantly. I must have been four or five.

I’ve always felt like calendula had many mysteries even though I’m not sure why, but it was fascinating to learn how long the plant has been around and how many things it’s used for. Your drawings are stunning by the way. Absolutely beautiful.

This is such a caring and thoughtful essay and poem about calendula. I hadn't heard of calendula until my mom bought hand cream for me at a farmer's market my parents and I stumbled upon. Somehow, it felt magical, whether real or imagined.
